  2. I must admit, the only reason I carry a cell phone these days is (1) My family/friends have a way to contact me since I decided not to have a land phone in my apartment this year, (2) call 411 to locate a number/place if I cannot find them in the phonebook, and (3) in case of an emergency on campus as well as on the road (car breaks down, accident, etc.).
I do not care about all the mumble-jumble of music, pictures, etc - just something basic!
I remember having the bulky cell phone packs with the battery attached in the car. As a youngster, I never relied on a cell phone. I do not even think I thought about it until my late teen years.
I think we are becoming dependent on them. In my BU 1000 class, a student said her cell phone is her best friend!! WHAT??? Absolutly not!
I turn my cell off when I study. I use to leave it in my car on purpose just to escape the nuisance of everyone calling or texting me for what seemed like every five minutes. I feel obligated to text someone back or I cannot focus on what I am doing.
My mom turns hers off immediately when she comes home from work and does not turn it back on until the next morning.
Cell phones are dangerous and I am SO happy that they passed a law regarding if you are under 18 and driving, you may not use your cell phone unless you witness a car accident/car trouble or are in one yourself. Why? Because 16-year olds are learning to drive and how to multi-task different objects (radio, surrounding traffic, cell phone) at the same time. It gives them two years to put driving into practice before taking out the cell phone and driving (which is never a good thing). On average, most car accidents are caused by teens learning to drive. Taking away the cell phone was a very smart idea!
It is not to say other age groups are not responsible for car accidents where they are on their cell phones.
Dependency on cell phones (100%) for students, (80%) for some adults.

  3. I really liked this posting. I have thought about this before. I think that cellphones do way too much and that is why people are so concerned with them. Cellphones should have one purpose I think and that is to call someone. All this extra stuff that cellphones have now are added distractions. I know when I first got a cellphone all it could do is call and because of that it was never a distraction to me in class, but times have changed and now it is.
