"Whether you think that you can or you can't, you're usually right."

Henry Ford is credited for this observation. I remember reading this article in the Wall Street Journal more than a year ago and was reminded of it when I ran a search for "self-efficacy." It seems most relevant at this time in the semester when obstacles seem to rise up and grow at tremendously rapid rates. Here's what the studies show. Students who believe they can achieve their goals are more likely to use the achievement strategies we have discussed all semester. That is, they recognize the link between good health and good grades and so they take better care of themselves. They recognize the importance of preparing for class and never missing a class. They worked in collaboration with others to complete homework assignments and projects and in preparing for exams. So, what was the cause of their success? Was it their belief in their own abilities or the study strategies they employed? You tell me.

  1. I think sucess is a state of mind. If you believe you can do something, and take the necessary steps, you can do it. Schoolwork is no different. If you make time to study, read the material, and prepare for exams, you can make good grades.

  2. I think it takes both. You have to have the confidence and the state of mind that you can succeed in order for you to excel in a class. However, all the confidence in the world will not get you an A. It also takes study skills and knowledge of how to succeed to be successful. With that being said, I do think that students that are consious of their health, work well with others, and have the attitude that they can get through a demanding week of school are the most successful students!

  3. I agree with what has already been stated above. In order to succeed you must first believe you can do it. If you don't believe in yourself you're not going to put in your full effort. What's the point if your thought is that the goal is impossible to reach? That being said those that think they can achieve their goals will try harder to complete them.

  4. I think its true that a negative attitude can make it alot harder for someone to have success in their goals but I dont think a person can just brainwash themselves by thinking positive thoughts either. For me, the negative or positive thoughts are based on reason; I have to have a reason to feel confident. If I just keep telling myself over and over Im going to do good on a test it doesn't mean that I will, but i actually have been confident before tests when i felt prepared. I believe I am capable of doing better in my classes than I have, but it is hard for me to believe that just having a positive outlook can make that much of a difference. I think the main thing is just putting in the time and effort.

  5. I think its true that keeping a possitive attitude can help you succeed in school and in life but I also believe that have a negative attitude can cause you to fail. I also think if you have a positive attitude and keep failing its better to try and stay possitive. An individuals outlook can make or break your success in life.

  6. I think that if you believe you can do something then you're more likely to succeed, the reason being is you have the right mind set and you are more likely to think of ways to succeed. Where as if you really don't believe in yourself or the objective you will be far less motivated to achieve it. It all starts with you and your mindset.

  7. From experience, I completely agree. Just put your mind to it, and make yourself EXCITED about it, and you will be able to accomplish far beyond what you would otherwise. Mindset is key. Just be happy, don't get so bogged down in how hard things are and how much you don't want to do them, but just be happy and excited about it. Life is too short to do something you don't want to do, so make the things you have to do good!

  8. It could be one following suit to the other. I would love to just copy my personal statement in here but sometimes it takes your own experiences - growing and learning that help you to develop self-discipline, responsbility, punctuality, etc.. Once you are able to develop those, understand how you learn, ways to project yourself, create, etc, it seems to all fall in place. Failing is giving up and running away. You should always try. Motivation is a key figure - you have to be motivated. Do not be NEGATIVE! But understand that education is important, it is not everything - make sure to balance your life.

  9. I also agree with comments previously stated. I think having confidence and maiking yourself excited about a course does effect how well you do in a course. When you feel confident about a course you are more motivated to study and succeed in that class, whereas if you doubt yourself and don't believe you'll pass chances are you won't spend as much time studying the course.

  10. I think that if students take care of themselves and study hard, then it is possible for anyone to get any grade and do anything they want to do. But if one doesn't take care of them selves, its going to be hard to keep up with studying

    ReplyDelete
  11. I think both. When you believe in yourself and know that you can and will get a good grade on something then it usually happens. However I've had times where I thought I studied very hard and did well on the test and ended up doing not so good. However, if people study, take care of themselves, and do their homework it's possible to make a good grade or the best that you can do!

  12. Well it certainly helps to have a "positive state of mind" if you go into everything you do with a negative attitude how can you expect to do well? To give yourself that positive reinforcement only helps you psychologically though, as you have to actually do the work to do well in whatever you set your mind to. But going in with a positive attitude may not only lower the stress you have with the assignment but may make the assignment that just that much easier to complete.

  13. I believe having confidence in yourself plays a key psychological role in how one performs academically. When you have a positive attitude, you usually perform better in class or on a test. A positive attitude, good, healthy living and productive study habits are all important to insure good performance and the best grades.

  14. I think that the ability for a student to achieve success is one hundred percent based on their state of mind. If a student has a mindset that they might not be able to do it, they will easily get discouraged or distracted or fall into mental road blocks. A student who has a focused mind and a determined attitude with a mindset like "I have no choice but to succeed" will not be hindered by obstacles that come during the semester that would discourage them. I have been here many times and have realized that attitude really does make all the difference.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I think that mindset has a lot to do with what gets done, and whether or not a goal is achieved. If the mindset is 'I believe I can get here and I'm going to get here, no matter what I must do,' then more than likely that person will do whatever it takes to reach their goal and not care what they have to go through. So yes, I agree with the statement that you will get done what you want to get done if you believe you can do it.

  16. I think the only attitude you can have if you are going to succeed at something difficult, such as having an entire semester of great grades, is one in which you know you can accomplish those grades. If your thoughts about your abilities fluctuate frequently, like mine have the tendency to do at times, then I think one is much more likely to slip up and become headed in the complete opposite direction. For me, it's all about knowing what I want and knowing that I am capable to accomplish those goals, which I AM. When this kind of thinking kicks in, then I do follow the achievement strategies much more than before.

  17. I like this quote because, it is right. If you go into a test thinking i am going to bomb it, you probably will not do well. If you go in with a positive view, there is a greater chance you will do good. It helps your brain and helps control the stress. It is good to have that "can do" attitude.

  18. Prof. Bandura calls "verbal persuasion" -- "getting effective encouragement that is tied to achievement, rather than empty praise."
I think this is something that is very important and often overlooked or not recognized by parents and teachers. Children and adults alike will begin to learn to discredit certain forms of praise and it will become useless. Or else, as stated in the article, one will never master the ability to learn from criticism and this may create greater difficulties in the long run.

  19. Students who believe that they can achieve their goals are more likely to use the strategies discussed all semester because they have high motivation and self-esteem. These normally go hand in hand at Baylor. The importance of preparing for class and never missing is a given. Of course you are going to have a better chance of succeeding if you attend all classes and come prepared. I think it was probably a combined effort: their belief in their abilities was given to them by employing and becoming routine with the study strategies.

  20. In high school my swim coach always preached this to us. I find this saying to be so true in life as well as school. When you have a positive attitude while studying a particular subject you tend to do better than when your studying is filled with self doubt.

    ReplyDelete
  21. It is a mixture of both. I think the students believed they could achieve their goals and they used what means they felt were necessary to do so. I think to reach a goal you first must believe you can do it, but it does take the proper skills to follow through.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I think it is their belief in their own abilities.
How does that saying go, Yo can do anything you set you mind to?
    Like the ringling bros..
They had a silly idea but they set out for it and became successful!

  23. I know my Dad has joked with me before that if determination alone could accomplish things, then I'd always be the winner. This was in response to my track competitions, and my coaches echoed the same things, unfortunately however though, being sure you can doesn't neccesarily mean you have the toolset for the job. Will you find a way? Sure. But thinking you can doesn't instantly mean you can. It takes time to find a way to accomplish what you want to, but assuming that you do that work, the way will come.
So, "whether you think you can, or whether you think you can't" is to me a matter of attitude only. Those with the motivation to try, will, and though they may not soar through with flying colors, the fact remains that they will soar through. For those convinced they cannot however, no attempt, or a very lacsidaisical attempt will be made. And success will not come. It is like the quote that "good things come to those who wait". Waiting is not a matter of passivity, but rather an endurance to stillness for awhile. The same goes with attitude, it is not merely thought, but the active commitment stemming from that though that will actually move things.
